Rivalry Renewed as Herrin Visits Carterville for Conference Opener
The Lions have opened the season with victories over Marion, Nashville and Charleston, outscoring those opponents 115-66. Carterville’s latest win came Friday night when the Lions defeated Charleston 42-28. The offense produced 416 total yards, including 366 on the ground, and did not commit a turnover.
Johnny Miller led the rushing attack against Charleston with 236 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Reggie Wilson added 71 yards and two scores, while quarterback Jack Dodson rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown. Dodson also connected with Zackary Carter for a 12-yard touchdown pass as Carterville scored six times during the first three quarters.
Herrin has dropped games to Benton, West Frankfort and Du Quoin, but the Tigers have shown offensive improvement each week. After scoring six points in their opener, Herrin produced 16 against West Frankfort and 20 in last week’s 35-20 loss to Du Quoin. Head coach Nathan Lieber leads a young roster that includes 21 sophomores, along with 12 juniors and 10 seniors.
Friday’s game begins a five-week conference schedule that will determine the SIRR Ohio Division champion. Carterville is attempting to defend its division title, but the Lions and Tigers both start the night 0-0 in conference play. That clean slate—and the emotions of a cross-county rivalry—should ensure Carterville receives Herrin’s best effort.
