It’s championship night in Metropolis, and the Carterville Lions are one win away from hanging an IHSA Class 2A Regional plaque. Carterville faces the Massac County Patriots in the Regional Final, with a lot more on the line than bragging rights. Win, and you keep the season rolling. Lose, and the lights go out fast — because February basketball doesn’t do “best of three.”
Carterville comes in playing like a team that knows exactly who it is. Through 31 games, the Lions are 28-3 and outscoring opponents 63.1 to 49.0, a strong +14.1 margin. That’s not just winning — that’s controlling games. And when you do that consistently, you don’t need perfect nights… you just need to be yourself.
The numbers show a balanced, efficient Carterville offense. The Lions shoot 47.8% from the floor and an impressive 57.0% on two-point shots, which tells you where the engine is: the paint. They also rebound well, grabbing offensive boards at a 32.9% clip, meaning one out of every three misses turns into another shot. Extra possessions in a Regional Final feel like finding cash in your pocket you forgot about.
But let’s be honest — this run starts on the defensive end. Over the last six games, Carterville has held opponents to 36, 51, 43, 41, 41, and 32 points. That’s a defensive heater, and it travels. The Lions don’t just guard — they make teams work for everything, and that grind becomes a problem when legs get heavy late.
This is the third meeting between Carterville and Massac County, and the series has already swung once. The Patriots took the first matchup 75-69 back on January 9. Carterville answered in a big way on February 13 with a 63-51 win, flipping the script with better defense, cleaner possessions, and more control. Now comes the rubber match — and this one comes with hardware.
The keys for Carterville are simple and very “Carterville.” Win the paint with that two-point efficiency, stay aggressive on the glass, and keep turnovers in check (the Lions average 11.2 per game with a 1.28 assist-to-turnover ratio). If the Lions play at their pace and force Massac to score against a set defense, Carterville puts itself in position to close late.
And the reward is real. The winner tonight advances to face the winner of Breese Central vs Breese Mater Dei, being played tonight in the Columbia Regional Final. Survive and advance is the motto, but Carterville isn’t just surviving right now — the Lions are imposing their style. Tip it, rip it, and let’s see who earns the next step.
