The Carterville Lions are heading into the next round of the postseason with momentum, confidence, and a flair for the dramatic. Through 33 games this season, the Lions have built an impressive 30-3 record while averaging 62.2 points per game and holding opponents to just under 49 points a night. That defensive consistency has been the backbone of Carterville’s success all winter, allowing the Lions to grind out wins in a variety of ways. Recently, however, the Lions have added another ingredient to their postseason recipe — late-game heroics.

Carterville enters its next matchup riding a nine-game winning streak and fresh off back-to-back buzzer beaters that have electrified Lions fans. In the Regional Championship against Massac County, the game was tied in the closing seconds before Carterville executed perfectly. Maddox Gulley delivered a clutch assist to Harper Lustenberger, who scored the game-winning basket as time expired to lift the Lions to a thrilling 47-45 victory and send Carterville to the sectional round. If that finish was dramatic, the sectional semifinal may have topped it. In a defensive battle against Breese Central, Carterville again found itself needing one final play. With time winding down, Max Lustenberger parked the corner and buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lions a stunning 46-43 win. The shot instantly became one of the most memorable moments of Carterville’s season and punched the Lions’ ticket to the Sectional Championship. (Video: Linda Drust)

Those two finishes perfectly capture the identity of this Carterville team. The Lions are balanced offensively and disciplined defensively, but perhaps most importantly, they remain calm in pressure moments. Carterville shoots nearly 48 percent from the field this season and better than 56 percent on two-point attempts, showing the team’s ability to generate quality scoring opportunities. At the same time, the Lions protect the basketball well, posting a solid 1.32 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Several players have been instrumental in Carterville’s success throughout the season. Colton Hawkins leads the Lions in scoring at just over 15 points per game and has been a consistent presence on both ends of the floor. Maddox Gulley adds more than 12 points per game and continues to be a playmaker when the Lions need a big moment, including the assist that helped deliver the regional title. Zachary Conder-Snow and Harper Lustenberger have also been key contributors offensively, while Max Lustenberger’s clutch three against Breese Central showed that Carterville has multiple players capable of stepping up in big situations.

What has made the Lions particularly dangerous during their current run is their defense. Carterville has held opponents to 50 points or fewer in 18 games this season, and that defensive intensity has been especially evident during the postseason. Both of the Lions’ last two wins came in defensive battles where every possession mattered. Even when shots have been hard to come by, Carterville has found ways to stay within striking distance.

Now the Lions prepare for their next postseason challenge with the confidence that comes from surviving pressure-packed finishes. Two games. Two buzzer beaters. Two unforgettable moments for Carterville basketball. If the Lions continue to defend the way they have all season and keep delivering in clutch moments, the Cardiac Cats may not be done creating March memories just yet.

Please make the trip to Nashville to support this group. They deserve a huge crowd there to support in person.
