Carterville Lions vs. West Frankfort Redbirds

The Carterville Lions are back on their home floor tonight as they host the West Frankfort Redbirds, looking to respond after a narrow 55–51 loss to Benton in the championship game of the Benton Invitational Tournament in overtime. Despite the setback, Carterville remains one of the area’s most consistent teams, now sitting at 21–3 on the season.
That championship loss snapped a strong tournament run for the Lions, but it did little to erase what has been a dominant stretch of basketball. Carterville has shown balance throughout the season, winning games with defense, efficient shooting, and steady ball movement. Close losses have been rare—and responses have usually been loud.
West Frankfort comes into tonight’s matchup with a 6–17 overall record. The Redbirds have struggled to find rhythm this season, but they bring experience and physical play that can challenge teams if allowed to hang around. For Carterville, the message is simple: take care of business early.
Statistically, the Lions continue to excel in key areas. They’ve shot well from the field, rebounded effectively, and limited turnovers in most of their wins. When Carterville controls tempo and defends in the half court, they’ve proven tough to beat—especially at home.
Tonight also marks another opportunity for the Lions to sharpen things up as the season moves deeper into conference and postseason play. Home games matter, momentum matters, and a focused effort tonight can quickly wash away the sting of the tournament loss.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 PM, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:30 PM. Catch all the action live on NewsRadio WJPF (AM 1340 / 99.5 FM) and on our YouTube livestream, with Dave McKenzie and John Homan on the call.
