Lions Carry Shutout Momentum Into Friday’s Trip to Harrisburg
The Carterville Lions head to Harrisburg on Friday night after a commanding 45-0 Homecoming win over Salem. Carterville controlled last week’s game from start to finish, building a 31-0 halftime lead and adding two more touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Lions piled up 520 yards of offense and 25 first downs against Salem. Quarterback Jack Dodson completed 17 of 19 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Carterville finished with 270 rushing yards and 250 passing yards, giving Salem trouble on the ground and through the air.
Miller led the rushing attack with 194 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, including a 74-yard scoring run. Gavin Johnson caught 10 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He also made a 23-yard field goal and kicked the extra points. It was the kind of night where the Lions seemed to have an answer every time they got the ball.
Carterville’s defense made sure Salem never found a way back in. The Wildcats managed 135 total yards and eight first downs, while the Lions forced three turnovers. Salem went just 2-for-9 on third down as Carterville completed the shutout.
Now the Lions turn their attention to the Harrisburg Bulldogs and another road test. Friday’s weather is expected to be much cooler than the conditions Carterville has played in since the season began. Fans might finally need a jacket under those Friday night lights.
