Winter Sports Seasons Begin Winding Down

The Carterville Lions Are State Bound!

After qualifying in third place at the Edwardsville Sectional last Saturday, the Carterville Lions Cheerleaders are heading to Bloomington's Grossinger Motor Arena for the IHSA Competitive Cheer State Final competition.

Twenty five teams from around the state of Illinois will be competing in the preliminary round in the small team division. The Carterville Lions will take the floor at 12:45 pm on Friday afternoon. The top 10 teams will advance to the Finals that take place on Saturday (time is TBA). The announcement of the top teams should take place about 1:30 PM.

This team has worked extremely hard this season and are noted to be one of the top teams in the state.

Good Luck to coaches Linda Drust, Bonnie Howerton and Amy Drust and to all of the girls. Bring home a that trophy!

Carterville Lions Girls Basketball Honors Seniors

McKenzie Rogman, Coach Matt Crain, Summer Rains and Lexi Swalls

Tuesday night was Senior Night for the three seniors on this years girls basketball team.

This years group of seniors include McKenzie Rogman, Summer Rains and Lexi Swalls.

The Lions beat Sparta in the game to push their record to 24-3 on the year.

I spoke with head coach Matt Crain and his team and specifically about these seniors after the Sparta game.

The Lady Lions are ranked #8 in this weeks Class 3A AP poll. Goreville is the only other Southern Illinois team ranked in the top 10, with the #7 spot in Class 1A.

The Lions will face the Pinckneyville Panthers tonight at PCHS at 7:45 pm. Then on Saturday, the Lions will host Massac County in the last game of the regular season at 4:00 pm at CHS.

Senior Night For Carterville Wrestling

This past Monday night was Senior Night for the Carterville Lions wrestling team. This years group of seniors include Bailey Hicks, Kaleb Ward and Matt Jones.

Last weekend, Bailey and Kaleb both set CHS records with Bailey scoring the most number of pins in a season and Kaleb the record for the most number of take downs in a season.

Congratulations to all three seniors and to the entire wrestling team.

The Lions will compete next in the IHSA Sectionals coming up on February 8th.

Two Games This Weekend For Boys Basketball

The Carterville Lions will hit the road on Friday night when they travel to Anna-Jonesboro to face the Wildcats in SIRR Conference action. Saturday, the Lions will host Massac County at CHS at 7:45 PM.

The Lions are coming off a heartbreaking loss the the Benton Rangers last Saturday in overtime 36-35.

Scott Hudson and I will have the call this weekend on NewsRadio WJPF with our pre-game show starting at 7:30 PM.
