The Carterville Lions made a loud statement Friday night, knocking off the Herrin Tigers 74–57 to take firm control of the SIRR Conference – Ohio Division race. From the opening tip, Carterville set the tone with energy on both ends of the floor and never let Herrin find a rhythm. The win moves the Lions to 21–2 on the season and adds another quality conference victory to an already impressive résumé.
Offensively, the Lions were balanced but led by a big night from Zach Snow, who poured in 23 points and consistently delivered in key moments. Maddox Gulley followed with 18 points, providing a steady scoring punch, while Harper Lustenberger added 13 and Colton Hawkins chipped in 11. Carterville’s ability to get production from multiple players kept the Tigers on their heels all night.
The numbers tell the story of control. Carterville led 18–11 after the first quarter, stretched the margin to 37–24 at halftime, and then blew the game open with a dominant third quarter. Defensive pressure forced tough shots, rebounding stayed in the Lions’ favor, and the pace remained exactly where Carterville wanted it. It was the kind of complete performance that championship teams put together in February.
There’s no time to celebrate for long. The Lions are right back on the floor tonight, facing the Benton Rangers in the Benton Invitational Tournament championship game. Coverage begins with pregame at 7:15 PM on NewsRadio WJPF, as Carterville looks to cap a big weekend with hardware. Momentum is rolling, confidence is high, and the Lions are playing their best basketball at the perfect time.
