Lions Football Only 8 Weeks Away

The IHSA this week released the 2018 High School football schedule for the upcoming season.

The Carterville Lions season will kick off on August 24th, when the Benton Rangers travel to Carterville.

You will notice a new opponent on week 9 as the Lions will hit the road to take on Effingham. The Lions will play the Flaming Hearts for the 2018 season only as a replacement for the Massac County Patriots who were dropped from the Lions schedule starting this year.

You will have a chance to "Meet the Lions" the week before opening night on Friday, August 17th, as all of the fall sports teams will be introduced on the field before the JV and varsity football teams scrimmage. Don't forget that food will be available as well.

The first official IHSA practice day is August 6th.

Summer time is also a time for basketball camps at school around the area. The 2018 Future Lion Basketball Camp led by Carterville Head Coach Shane Hawkins and his staff will take place July 9-12 at Carterville High School gym.

The camp will include instruction on basketball fundamentals including passing, dribbling and shooting.

The cost of the camp is only $50.00 for all three days of camp.

Rain, Rain, Stay Away!

The rain has just played havoc on the baseball schedule for the Southern Illinois Miners all season long, and it continued this week as well.

Earlier in the week, we had some storms that rolled through and the clouds were amazing. Some of the pictures are post to the left.

Thursday night though was the worst as the game was postponed. Just as the notice was given that the game had been postponed for the night, that's when the tornado sirens started sounding in Williamson County.

The Miners have had eight games rained out this season. This is so hard on a team as it plays havoc with the pitching rotation.

The Miners are home this weekend for a three game set against the Gateway Grizzlies.

The Miners have one two in row and have gotten back in to second place only 1.5 games out of first. Only five games separate the first and last place teams in the west division.

Tonight will be a great night to come out to ROP, as it's Military Appreciation Night along with the usual Fantastic Friday Fireworks after the game.
