IT’s GAMEDAY! - Carterville at Benton in Season Opener

Updated: Aug 30, 2019

Lions Head Coach Brett Diel addresses his team after the first official day of practice.

Coach Brett Diel and the Carterville Lions will open the 2019 IHSA football season on the road at Benton Friday night.

Carterville is coming off a season in which they finish 3-6 for the year.

I always like this week one match-up with Benton, as it's is typically a very competitive game and a good barometer of what each of the team will have for the season.

Last year, the Lions beat Benton 20-6 in a game that was suspended on Friday night due to lightning.

Weather should not be a factor this year. As a matter of fact, Friday nights forecast as of this writing is for temps in the upper 70's at game time.

When you look at this Lions team on paper, the one thing that stands out is how young of a squad they are.

Here is the breakdown of this years team by class:

5 Seniors

25 Juniors

19 Sophomores

A large number of the underclassmen, all were able to see significant playing time a year ago, and having that varsity football experience should pay dividends for Coach Brett Diel and the Lions.

When it comes to breaking down this team and what we might expect this year is a lot of SPEED. This team is extremely athletic and they bring impressive speed that should give opponents issues.

We will find out how the Lions will do on Friday night in Benton. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.

Scott Hudson and I will have the call on NewsRadio WJPF starting at 6:45 pm with our pre-game show. Don't forget you can hear the game on our FM home at 99.5 FM.

If you can't make to the game, we will be live-streaming the games again this year. You can watch the game here:

I want to say thank you to all of the Carterville Lions Athletic Booster Club members and to everyone that attended to make this years event such a success.

It's amazing to see how many of our students participate in sports during the fall season on both the junior high and high school levels.

We are very fortunate to have a booster club that works so hard to make sure the athletic teams have the things they need to be able to compete year end and year out.

If you missed the player introductions or the football scrimmage from Meet the Lions, you can watch here:

There is still plenty of time to register play in or sponsor a hole for the 7th Annual Carterville Lions Basketball Golf Scramble.

If you would like to register or need information on sponsoring a hole for the scramble contact either Coach Hawkins at 618-267-5607 or Coach Crain at 618-922-0335.

This is always a great time plus it's a perfect time to get to know some of the players and coaches of Carterville basketball.

As always "LETS GO LIONS!"
