Gameday! - Herrin Tigers at Carterville Lions

Coach Brett Diel with his team prior to game at Benton. August 29, 2019

So, last Friday was not the game that anyone expected I assume. I know I didn't.

The Carterville Lions hit the road to kick off the 2019 football season and get shut out by an impressive Benton Rangers team 42-0.

Just never seemed like the Lions could get on track while the Rangers took control of the game early and didn't let up. Then, the injuries started piling up.

Hopefully, tonight will go much better for Coach Brett Diel and the Lions.

Both of these teams come into tonight's game 0-1 and both teams know that this is an important game to both squads.

Last year, the Tigers beat Carterville 49-35 in a back and forth game. The deciding factor in the game was an on-side kick called by Coach Karnes after taking the lead.

What do I expect tonight? Truthfully, I don't know what to expect from this young Lions team. I know I didn't expect them to get shut out a week ago. I know I don't expect them to get shut out tonight.

This team is capable of putting points on the board. They are very gifted at the skill positions, plus they are fast. The key to tonight will be the line play.

On the offensive side, the Lions are going to have to open some holes to get the running game going. If they can do that, then that should help open up the passing game for QB Eli Downen and the group of receivers.

I had a chance to talk to Head Coach Brett Diel about tonight's game against their cross county rival Herrin Tigers.

Should be a great atmosphere for high school football tonight. Kick-off is slated for 6:45 pm tonight with kick-off at 7:00 PM.

You can join me and Scott Hudson for the call on NewsRadio WJPF (99.5 FM/1340 AM). Don't forget, you can always watch the live stream with the radio call here:

If you are coming to the game, don't forget that Greenbrier Road in front of the Carterville Community Center in Cannon Park will be closed for the Carterville Free Fair. You may want to leave a little early to head to the high school.

I hope to see you there tonight to help cheer on the Lions. "LETS GO LIONS"!
