Carterville Winter Sports Teams Start Off The Season On Fire

First off, I just want to say that I hope everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday.

The winter sports started this past week for the Carterville Lions, and what a start it's been.

Matt Crain and the Lady Lions began play in the Salem Thanksgiving Tournament last week and picked up three wins start off the season.

On Thursday, the Lions took on Belleville-Althoff and won 50-43. On Saturday, the Lions had two games beating Salem 44-42 and then capped off the evening with a 60-44 win over Centralia.

Last night the Lions took a break from the tourney to face Carbondale in a non-conference game. They had to over come a couple of injuries, but get the win 46-23. Bucky Dent from The Southern has the story.

The Lady Lions will finish up play in the Salem Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend when they play two games on Saturday starting at 11:00 am when they face the host Salem Lady Wildcats. They will wrap up the tourney when they take on the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes starting at 7:00 PM.

Boys Basketball Opens With Win Over Host Herrin Tigers

Coach Shane Hawkins and the Carterville Lions kicked off the 2018 season with an impressive win over the Herrin Tigers on the first night of the Pyramid Plus Tourney being held at Herrin this year.

The Lions came out aggressive on both ends of the floor and overcame twenty one turnovers to knock off the host team 60-51.

Last year the Tigers beat Carterville in all three games they played, beating the Lions by an average of nine points a game. The Lions forced Herrin into twenty turnovers Monday night and hit their free throws down the stretch.

Here is the post-game interview with Coach Hawk after the game.

Austin Garbe led the Lions in scoring with 20 points on the night. Others getting in the score book include:

Dylan Moore - 12, Cameron Hall - 8, Eli Downen - 6, Carson Pearson - 5,

The Lions will take on the Collinsville Kahoks tonight as the Pyramid Plus Tourney continues. Time off is set for 7:00 pm at Herrin High School.

The boys will take a break on Thanksgiving day but will get right back at it Friday at 5:30 when they face the Meridian Wildcats and then will wrap up the tourney on Saturday when they play two games. The first game will start at 10:00 am when they face the Marion Wildcats and then the last game of the night will be at 5:30 PM when they play the Mt. Vernon Rams.
