Carterville Lions Wrap Up 2018 Season at Effingham

Week number nine! The end of the season!

The Carterville Lions hit the road Friday night as they wrap up the 2018 football season in Effingham to take on the Flaming Hearts.

The Lions come in to the game with a 3-5 record, and on a two game winning streak. Effingham is 6-2 going into the last week of the high school football season and they are riding a six-game winning streak.

The Flaming Hearts will be playing a week ten game in the first round of the IHSA playoffs. The Lions will not.

It’s really odd to say that. The Lions won’t be in the playoffs.

You look back at the season and it’s especially hard to swallow the whole no playoffs this year, when you realize that the playoffs were within reach for this team if but for a couple of plays, a couple of games.

In week two, the Lions went toe-to-toe with the Herrin Tigers. A gutsy on-side kick call by Tigers Head Coach Jason Karnes changed the momentum of a game the Lions were scoring at will. The kick recovered by Herrin changed that game and pushed Herrin to a 49-35 win.

In week three, the Lions suffer a 21-19 loss Murphysboro. There were several chances for the Lions to win that game...but they didn’t.

if the Lions win those two games, they are 5-3 Whole. Different. Season.

The Lions play one of the toughest schedules in Southern Illinois. Let’s look at their opponents and their record this season.

Week 1 - Benton Rangers 1-7

Week 2 - Herrin Tigers 6-2

Week 3 - Murphysboro Red Devils 6-2

Week 4 - DuQuoin Indians 6-2

Week 5 - Anna Jonesboro Wildcats 6-2

Week 6 - Nashville Hornets 7-1

Week 7 - Sparta Bulldogs 1-7

Week 8 - Pinckneyville Panthers 3-5

That's a combined record of 36-28, but when you look at weeks 2-6, those teams have a combined mark of 31-9. All of those teams will be playing a playoff game next week.

I guess I will leave the what-ifs right there except to say “There’s always next year”. I really don’t like saying that.

Friday night the Lions still have a chance to make a difference on the playoffs if they can knock off Effingham. Putting an L on the Flaming Hearts could have a significant impact on their seeding in the playoffs and could make a difference in them getting a home game or a road game in the playoffs.

I spoke with Coach Dennis Drust about the final game of the season for the Lions.

Scott Hudson and I will have the call on NewsRadio WJPF starting at 6:45 pm. If you can't make the trip to Effingham, you can watch the game here:

Let’s go out there and make a difference!

Also, the Carterville Lions Football team are selling their Lion Backer cards now. You can purchase a card from any football player. They are only $15 and will give you a discount at many local businesses.
