Lady Lions Win Carbondale Winter Classic For Third Year In A Row

It’s been a busy basketball season for high school sports and in particular for the Carterville Lions boys and girls teams.

Last week, Coach Matt Crain and the Lady Lions won the Carbondale Winter Classic Tourney for the third year in a row with a win over the host team Carbondale Terriers.

The Lady Lions are 21-3 for the year and they continue to dominate in games with schools bigger than CHS. In this tourney alone they beat Marion, Mt. Vernon and Carbondale...all South Seven schools.

Congratulations to Abbey Crain and Megan Barton for being selected to the All-Tournament Team and Jeniah Thompson who named the tourney MVP.

After being named the Carbondale Winter Classic Tournament MVP, Carterville Lady Lions' Jeniah Thompson is nominated for the WSIL TV3 Player Of The Week.

At the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic, Coach Shane Hawkins and his Lions went 2-2 to finish in 4th place overall.

Sophomore Eli Downen was named to the All-Tourney team.

There are only nine regular season games remaining for the Lions. This week, both games are at home when the Lions host Du Quoin in SIRR conference action. On Saturday, the Benton Rangers will be in town for a non-conference game. Both games will start at 7:45 pm.

Only five regular season games remain for the Lady Lions. Tonight (Tuesday) they will travel to Anna-Jonesboro for SIRR conference game. Thursday night, the Nashville Hornettes will travel to Carterville for a SIRR Conference game for first place in the Mississippi side of the conference.

Going to to play tonight, the Lady Lions and Nashville sit atop of the conference with 5-1 records. Anna-Jonesboro are just behind in third with a 4-2 record, so this is a big week for the Lady Lions in the SIRR Conference.
