As Winter Sports Wrap Up, Spring Sports Are Just Around The Corner

As most of the winter sports season have wrapped up, the Carterville Lions basketball regular season will wrap up tonight on the road at Herrin.

The Lions will face the Tigers on their Senior Night starting at 7:45 PM.

Coach Shane Hawkins and the Lions will bring their 13-17 record into the game and try to duplicate the results the last time these two teams met. The Lions kicked off the season with a 60-51 win over Herrin in their opening game of the season in the Pyramid Plus Tourney.

Neither of these teams are the same team they were to kick off the season.

The Tigers are one of the top teams in Southern Illinois. They are riding a fourteen game winning streak and are coming off a 55-50 win over Massac County, and finishing the SIRR Ohio Division conference season undefeated. The Tigers have a record of 23-4 and sit just outside the AP top ten rankings in Class 3A IHSA ranking. This week they received three votes.

The Lions, 13-17 for the year, have lost three of their last four and will again be without their top scorer, Eli Downen who remains unable to play due to injury. The Lions have also been battling illness the last part of the as well.

Tip-off tonight is slated for 7:45 pm.

The Lions will open play in the Class 3A Massac County Regional on Monday night when they take on the Marion Wildcats. The game will start at approximately 7:30 pm.

You can listen the game tonight starting at 7:30 pm on NewsRadio WJPF or online at wjpf.com. You can also watch and listen to the game on our YouTube live stream here:

Lady Lions Basketball Complete Their Season

What a year it was for Coach Matt Crain and the Lady Lions basketball team.

* SIRR Mississippi Division conference champions

* Carbondale Holiday Tourney Champions

* Winners of the Class 3A Regionals for the seventh year in a row

* Set a school record for wins, finishing the season 28-4

This past Thursday, the Lions lost to a very good Breese Mater Dei Lady Knights team in the Class 3A Sectional semi-final game at Salem High School 55-46.

The Lady Knights team is one of the most fundamentally sound basketball teams I've seen in a couple of years in either boys or girls high school basketball.

Thank you Matt Crain and Assistant Coach Jennie Gibbs and all of the Lady Lions on a fantastic season. A special thank you to the three seniors, McKenzie Rogman, Summer Rains and Lexi Swalls, as well.

Junior Lions Selected 101.5 CIL-FM/103.5 ESPN Team of the Week

Congratulations to Coach Cory Clouser and the Lions on being selected the Team of the Week last week on Sportsvoice.

The Lions who won the Class L state championship a week ago, are the only junior high team to be selected team of the week.

Once again, congratulations Lions.
