Coach Shane Hawkins and the Carterville Lions improved to 3-1 on the season after their 63-59 win over the Vienna Eagles on Tuesday night.

The Lions got a hot start from their senior guard Josh Waller, as he scored 12 of his game high and career high 22 points in the first quarter to pace the Lions to a 17-13 lead after the first quarter.

The Lions led at halftime 31-27, and 50-39 after after three quarters.

The Eagles picked up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, as they cut the lead down to one point late. The Lions finished strong and walked away with the four point win.

Josh Waller was selected as our Player of the Game with 22 points.

Drew Barrington had 15 points and Kaden Wilson finished with 10 points and played an outstanding defensive game.

Other Lions getting in the scorebook:

Last week the Carterville Lions opened the 2023 basketball season in the Trico invitational tournament. The Lions picked up wins over the Steelville Warriors and the Trico Pioneers.

In the final game of the tourney, the Red Bud Musketeers had a lead of 16 points in the second half, however, the Lions battled back late, but came up just short losing 51-48.

Coming up tomorrow night the Carterville Lions, head to Vienna to face the Eagles in non-conference play.

Vienna enters the game with a 4-2 record with wins over Carrier Mills, Meridian, Eldorado and Madison. Their two losses were against Massac County and Lyon County high school.

Hope to see you there in person or on our livestream broadcast.
